How to use an online metronome
A metronome plays a steady pulse to help you keep time. Start at a comfortable speed and aim for an even rhythm before increasing the tempo.
Find your BPM
BPM means beats per minute. At 60 BPM you hear one beat each second; at 120 BPM you hear two. Set the tempo shown on your music, or choose a slower practice tempo. Tap tempo helps when you know the rhythm but not the number.
Choose beats per bar
Use four beats for 4/4 time or three for 3/4. The first beat marks the start of each bar. For 6/8, you can count six eighth-note beats or two dotted-quarter beats, depending on the pulse you want to follow.
Add subdivisions
Clicks per beat divide the pulse into smaller parts. With a quarter-note beat, choose two clicks for eighth notes or four for sixteenth notes. Start with one click per beat, then add subdivisions when you need help placing notes evenly.
A few useful answers
Metronome questions
What tempo should I practise at?
Choose a BPM at which you can play accurately and comfortably. If a passage feels rushed or uneven, slow down. Increase the tempo in small steps once you can repeat it steadily.
How do I set a metronome for 6/8 time?
For a two-beat feel, set two beats per bar and three clicks per beat. Your BPM then counts dotted-quarter notes. To count all six eighth notes instead, use six beats per bar and one click per beat, with the BPM counting eighth notes. Why can’t I hear the metronome?
Press play inside the metronome first. Check your device volume and whether the browser tab is muted. If it still won't play, try opening the app on its own (opens in a new tab).
